the Back Lock
The Back Lock is a foundational Bronze figure in Quickstep, essential for creating dynamic movement and rhythmic variety. It allows dancers to travel backwards with control and elegance, often used to navigate crowded floors or transition into other figures. Like a swift bird gliding effortlessly through the air, this step embodies the timeless beauty of seamless motion.
The Back Lock is usually a bronze-level Quickstep figure. For the full list of Quickstep figures corresponding to each medal level, as per the book “Ballroom Technique” or Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), see the Figure List for Quickstep.

Step 1 (Slow):
Align your body backing diagonal wall, stepping back left foot in contra body movement position with toe-to-heel footwork, maintaining consistent body alignment without turn. Keep your left shoulder gently guiding the movement as you commence rising at the end of this step, ensuring your heel lifts naturally without abruptness. Use contra body movement to initiate the backward travel while stabilizing your frame, preparing for the upcoming lock step. Focus on a smooth upward energy through your core, allowing your knees to soften subtly for controlled elevation.
Maintain a firm but supple frame connection to lead the lady securely, ensuring your torso remains centered and upright throughout the backward progression.
Step 2 (Quick):
Step back right foot directly beneath your body, still backing diagonal wall, with toe footwork as you continue rising through the ball of the foot. Sustain a steady body position without sway or rotation, keeping hips aligned under your shoulders to avoid tilting. Elevate smoothly by extending your ankles and engaging your calf muscles, preserving a light connection to the floor.
Focus on harmonious body flight by elongating your spine and keeping your head poised leftward, allowing your arms to channel energy without rigidity.
Step 3 (Quick):
Cross your left foot lightly in front of the right foot, toe to toe, maintaining backing diagonal wall alignment with no turn. Rise fully onto the toes while keeping knees relaxed and close, creating a compact “lock” position without jarring the lady. Ensure minimal space between feet for agility, using subtle ankle flexion to control the crossing motion.
Sustain forward poise toward the lady with unwavering frame integrity, letting your head remain softly turned left for aesthetic line and balance.
Step 4 (Slow):
Step diagonally back with your right foot, toe-heel, against line of dance while lowering steadily at the end of the step. Guide the movement with controlled hip motion, finishing with weight fully settled on the right foot as you prepare for the next figure. Complete the descent by gradually releasing through the ball of the foot to the heel, anchoring your posture.
Keep shoulders level and frame expansive to support the lady’s forward drive, ensuring your motion flows like a steady river.

Step 1 (Slow):
Begin facing diagonal wall, stepping forward right foot in contra body movement position outside partner with heel-to-toe footwork. Rise gently at the end of the step by lifting your heel smoothly, engaging your core to project forward without leaning. Keep shoulders parallel to the man’s, using contra body movement to mirror his backward path.
Extend your spine elegantly with head turned right, feeling the lead through a responsive but light frame connection.
Step 2 (Quick):
Step forward left foot diagonally toward line of dance with toe footwork, continuing to rise while aligning your body facing diagonal wall. Move with purpose but without haste, keeping hips centered under your torso to maintain balance. Elevate through the balls of both feet, ensuring ankles remain supple and knees softly bent.
Maintain graceful body flight by stretching upward through your neck and back, allowing your left arm to float gently in harmony with the man’s guidance.
Step 3 (Quick):
Cross your right foot neatly behind the left foot, toe to toe, with no turn as you rise fully onto the toes. Position feet close together for a swift lock, releasing the left toe promptly from the floor to facilitate smooth crossing. Keep your upper body steady and aligned, avoiding any forward or backward sway.
Hold your frame resiliently yet fluidly, with head poised right and eyes gazing past the man’s shoulder for polished lines.
Step 4 (Slow):
Step forward left foot diagonally toward line of dance with toe-heel footwork, lowering smoothly at the step’s end. Settle your weight completely onto the left foot while sustaining forward poise, preparing to transition into the next figure. Control the descent by rolling through the foot gradually.
Keep frame contact consistent and elastic, moving as one unit with the man for seamless coordination.
