Quickstep: Double Reverse Spin

The Double Reverse Spin is a cornerstone of Quickstep, blending dynamic rotation with smooth progression down the line of dance. Its elegance lies in the seamless fusion of controlled turns and buoyant flight, essential for maintaining momentum in fast sequences. Like a leaf swirling gracefully in an autumn breeze, this figure embodies timeless sophistication through its effortless turns and harmonious partnership.

The Double Reverse Spin is usually a bronze-level Quickstep figure. For the full list of Quickstep figures corresponding to each medal level, as per the book “Ballroom Technique” or Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), see the Figure List for Quickstep.

Double Reverse Spin (Man)

Commence in Closed Position,

Step 1 (Slow): Left Foot Forward
Commence facing diagonal center, stepping forward onto the heel of your left foot with body turn to the left, using contra body movement to initiate rotation. Maintain a strong forward poise, rising slightly at the end of the step without lifting the heel prematurely, ensuring controlled momentum. Keep your frame expansive and shoulders level, avoiding any collapse of the left side by stretching upward through your spine. Focus on maintaining a forward drive through your center to prevent leaning into the turn.

Step 2 (Slow): Right Foot to Side
Transition to the ball of your right foot, placing it side-back with a three-eighths left turn between steps one and two, aligning your body to back diagonal wall. Rise fully onto the toe early in this step, ensuring your weight transfers smoothly without disrupting the lady’s heel turn. Sustain a neutral body sway and upright posture, with your head held confidently toward the direction of travel. Delay this step until the lady’s feet close to avoid crowding her space.

Step 3 (Quick): Left Foot Closes Without Weight
Pivot sharply on the ball of your right foot, closing your left foot to your right without weight as you complete a quarter left turn to face the wall. Maintain a high body position throughout this toe pivot, keeping your knees flexed and upper body stable. Coordinate your frame with the lady’s movement, ensuring your right arm supports her without rigidity. Use your core to control the pivot’s speed, avoiding any downward collapse.

Step 4 (Quick): Hold on Right Foot
Hold weight on your right foot while pivoting a final quarter turn left to face line of dance, lowering softly to the heel at the end of the step. Keep your rise controlled and upper body calm, allowing the turn to conclude with precision. Ensure your frame remains connected and responsive, guiding the lady into the next figure. Lower smoothly on the “and” count to achieve a grounded finish.

Double Reverse Spin (Lady)

Commence in Closed Position,

Step 1 (Slow): Right Foot Back
Begin backing diagonal center, stepping back onto the toe and heel of your right foot with contra body movement, initiating a left turn while rising slightly without foot rise. Take a generous step backward, keeping your right shoulder aligned over your foot and your left side lifted to preserve frame volume. Resist rotating your shoulders faster than your hips, and direct your head weight away from the man. Keep your arms forward and elbows soft to avoid pulling the man off balance.

Step 2 (Slow): Left Foot Closes (Heel Turn)
Draw your left foot to your right in a heel turn, completing three-eighths left turn to face line of dance, lowering through the heel while continuing to rise. Straighten both legs gradually and turn your head slightly left, centering your spine without leaning toward the man. Maintain a neutral sway, using your left foot to push gently into the next step. Delay head rotation to match the turn’s natural progression.

Step 3 (Quick): Right Foot to Side and Slightly Back
Step side-back onto the toe of your right foot with a quarter left turn, backing the wall while keeping your body flight fluid and elevated. Swing freely from your center, using momentum from the heel turn to create lightness, and swivel smoothly on your right foot. Keep your arms extended forward, offering them to the man without tension. Push off strongly from your left foot to enhance rotational flow.

Step 4 (Quick): Left Foot Crosses in Front
Cross your left foot in front of your right onto the toe and heel, turning an eighth left to back line of dance, lowering softly at the step’s end. Sustain rise until the final moment, ensuring your left side remains positively forward and aligned with the man. Connect through a supple frame, allowing your body to follow the crossing motion gracefully. Finish with a controlled lower on the “and” count to preserve musicality.

General Notes

Core Points

  • Footwork precision: Execute heel leads, toe releases, and pivots cleanly to maintain rhythm and balance during rapid turns.
  • Controlled rise and fall: Rise gradually from step one, sustain elevation through steps two and three, and lower softly at the end of step four to avoid jerky movements.
  • Alignment discipline: Strictly adhere to directional changes (e.g., diagonal center to backing wall) to navigate turns spatially.
  • Contra body movement: Engage torso rotation early to initiate spins without sacrificing poise.

Advanced Elements

  • Frame Stability: Keep arms forward and elbows soft to absorb movement without breaking connection.
  • Sway Neutrality: Minimize lateral tilt to prioritize rotational fluidity and shared axis alignment.
  • Body Flight Harmony: Match the partner’s speed in pivots for seamless, gliding transitions.
