Learn how to beautifully dance
the Forward Lock
The Forward Lock is a foundational Quickstep figure that combines dynamic movement with precise footwork, essential for navigating crowded floors and maintaining flow. This newcomer/bronze-level pattern features a distinctive “slow, quick, quick, slow” rhythm (SQQS), creating a diagonal “locking” action that propels dancers down the line of dance. Like intertwined vines yielding to a breeze, its elegance lies in the seamless transfer of energy between partners—a timeless expression of unity in motion.
The Forward Lock is usually a bronze-level Quickstep figure. For the full list of Modern Waltz figures corresponding to each medal level, as per the book “Ballroom Technique” or Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), see the Figure List for Quickstep.

Step 1 (Slow: RF forward in CBMP)
Begin facing diagonal wall, stepping your right foot forward in contra body movement position outside partner, with heel-toe footwork and no body turn. Keep your right shoulder level and avoid leaning into the follower; instead, initiate a gentle rise at the end of the beat while directing movement down the line of dance. Your body should face slightly toward the wall while your feet align with diagonal wall, ensuring your frame remains steady and centered. Maintain a firm but flexible connection through your right side to support the follower’s backward step without disrupting her balance.
Step 2 (Quick: LF diagonally forward)
Move your left foot diagonally forward along the line of dance, rising fully onto the toe with continuous upward momentum. Keep feet parallel and hips aligned with diagonal wall, allowing natural hip rotation but avoiding overt sway. Focus on projecting your left side forward to create space for the upcoming lock, with your head poised left and eyes directed confidently ahead. Sustain a light, elastic frame to facilitate smooth coordination as your body flight carries you fluidly into the cross.
Step 3 (Quick: RF cross behind LF)
Cross your right foot tightly behind the left, staying on the toes with feet pointing diagonal wall. Rotate your upper body minimally to guide the follower, ensuring hips remain square to the direction of travel. The lock action should feel compact and controlled—like closing a drawer—with your weight centered between both feet. Lead the lock by subtly shifting your trajectory toward the line of dance, ensuring the follower feels the diagonal pathway through your unified frame.
Step 4 (Slow: LF diagonally forward)
Step left foot diagonally forward along the line of dance, lowering from toe to heel at the end of the beat. Prepare for the next figure (e.g., a Four Quick Run) by transitioning into CBMP outside partner, maintaining consistent body alignment toward the wall. Your left side should extend forward like an arrow, channeling momentum into the next driving step. Keep your frame expansive and grounded to stabilize the descent, ensuring continuous flow into the subsequent figure.
Forward Lock (Lady)
Commence in Closed Position, facing DC.
| # | Count | Alignment | Steps | Footwork | Turn | Rise & Fall | CBM | Sway | Moving | Position |
| 1 | S | T | com to turn | com to rise e/o 1 | ||||||

Step 1 (Slow: LF back in CBMP)
Start backing diagonal wall, stepping left foot back in contra body movement position with toe-heel footwork and slight right shoulder rotation. Rise at the end of the beat without foot rise, keeping weight forward over the ball of the foot to avoid collapsing into the heel. Your hips should rotate right to mirror the leader’s shape, creating a coiled tension that prepares for the lock. Engage your core to resist backward weight drift, ensuring your spine remains lifted and responsive to the leader’s forward drive.
Step 2 (Quick: RF back)
Step right foot straight back along the line of dance, rising onto the toe while continuing the upward momentum. Release the left toe from the floor as you move, rotating your hips further right to maintain body contact and alignment. Keep your head tilted naturally left, with energy stretching diagonally away from the leader to create a balanced arc. Visualize your body as a pendulum—controlled yet fluid—as your backward movement harmonizes with the leader’s forward flight.
Step 3 (Quick: LF cross in front of RF)
Cross your left foot snugly in front of the right, toes pointing diagonal wall, with no body turn. Keep weight centered and poised slightly forward, ensuring the lock moves cleanly backward along one line. Your left side should feel elongated, with shoulders relaxed and frame resilient against compression. Anticipate the leader’s directional shift by aligning your hips diagonally, allowing the cross to flow like a zipper closing.
Step 4 (Slow: RF diag back)
Step right foot diagonally back, lowering from toe to heel while sustaining body rotation to the right. Push smoothly through the ball of the left foot to initiate the next figure, ensuring no pause disrupts the momentum. Your hip rotation should amplify as you exit, creating a dynamic “unwinding” effect. Roll through the foot like a wave kissing the shore—fluid and silent—to preserve the figure’s buoyant continuity.
General Notes
Core Points
- Alignment: Both partners’ feet point diagonal wall (leader)/back diagonal wall (follower), while bodies face the wall. This diagonal orientation enables clean locking and prevents twisting.
- Footwork: Leader uses heel-toe (Step 1), toe (Steps 2–3), toe-heel (Step 4); follower uses toe-heel (Step 1), toe (Steps 2–3), toe-heel (Step 4). Consistent footwork ensures controlled rise and fall.
- Timing: Strict SQQS rhythm (slow = 2 beats, quick = 1 beat). Rushing the lock destabilizes balance.
- Rise & Fall: Gradual rise from Step 1’s end, peak on Steps 2–3, lower at Step 4’s end. Avoid abrupt “bouncing.”
- Contra Body Movement: Leader uses slight CBM on Step 1 to initiate direction; follower mirrors this rotation naturally.
Advanced Elements
- Musicality: Emphasize the “slow” steps for drive; the “quicks” should feel light and airy, like skipping stones.
- Frame: A quiet, non-yielding frame prevents “arm leading.” The leader’s right shoulder must stay flat to avoid tilting the follower.
- Body Lines: Follower’s diagonal stretch away from the leader (left side forward) creates elegant counterbalance.
- Coordination: Sync hip rotation during locks—a “corkscrew” motion ensures effortless weight transfers.
Flow: Treat the lock as a comma, not a period—momentum flows unbroken into the next figure.
“This figure is the dance’s heartbeat—a syncopated pause that propels the next surge of life.”
