Foxtrot: Closed Impetus & Feather Finish

Silver Level Figure. A smooth, turning transition from promenade back to closed position.
_______________________________________________

The Closed Impetus and Feather Finish is a foundational figure that beautifully combines rotational energy with linear flight, essential for navigating the floor with variety. It serves as a classic and practical method to change alignment, often used to avoid collisions or to set up for a new sequence of steps down the line of dance. It is the dancer’s elegant answer to a change of heart, pivoting on a moment’s notice before soaring forward with renewed purpose.

The Closed Impetus with Feather Finish is usually a pre-bronze level Foxtrot figure. For the full list of Foxtrot figures corresponding to each medal level, see the Figure List for Foxtrot.

Closed Impetus & Feather Finish (Man)

Step 1 (Slow): Left foot back.
Step straight back along the line of dance, initiating a right turn through strong body rotation and not from the arms. Keep your frame absolutely solid and your right side forward to guide the lady, ensuring your weight is fully transferred onto the left foot with the toe pointing outwards. The heel of your right foot will release from the floor naturally as you commence the turn, with a slight flexion in the knees preparing for the subsequent rise. Your body sway should remain neutral throughout this step to maintain a strong, balanced connection with your partner. Maintain a firm but flexible frame to lead the turn with your body and not your arms.

Step 2 (Quick): Right foot closes to left foot (Heel Turn).
Pivot sharply on the heel of your left foot, continuing the right face turn and drawing your right foot closed to your left without weight. Transfer your weight fully onto the right foot as it closes, rising onto the ball of the foot to complete the rotation and achieve a clean three-eighths turn between steps one and two. Your body will now exhibit a slight left sway, with your head maintaining its natural position looking toward your partner over your left shoulder. This controlled rise and pivot creates the impetus that swings the lady around you. Ensure your feet close neatly together to remain on your spot and provide a stable axis for your partner.

Step 3 (Quick): Left foot to side and slightly back.
Step side and slightly back on the ball of your left foot, lowering gently at the end of this step to conclude the Impetus portion of the figure. Your alignment will now be backing diagonally to the center against the line of dance, having turned a total of three-eighths to the right from the start. Your body sway returns to neutral as you prepare to step back, ensuring your frame remains forward and connected to the lady to lead the forthcoming feather finish. The movement should be a smooth, unhurried transition from the turn into the backward step. Push off strongly from your right foot to project your body into the next step with purpose and flow.

Step 4 (Slow): Right foot back.
Step back with your right foot, down the line of dance, beginning to turn left with gentle body rotation to prepare for the feather finish. Rise slightly at the end of this step, keeping your knees soft and your left side leading strongly to guide the lady into promenade position. Your head should remain steady, looking toward your partner, with your frame moving as a single unit to indicate the forthcoming change of position. This step is the preparation for the following side step, storing potential energy for the elegant opening into promenade. Keep your shoulders level and avoid leaning back into the step, which would break the forward poise and connection.

Step 5 (Quick): Left foot to side and slightly forward.
Step side and slightly forward onto the ball of your left foot, turning left one-quarter turn between steps four and five to end pointing diagonally to center. Your body will now exhibit a clear right sway, opening slightly into promenade position as your right side moves forward toward the lady. Continue to rise throughout this step, maintaining a strong connection through your right hand and arm to lead the lady forward. Your head may turn slightly to the right to look in the direction of movement, enhancing the body line. This side step should be taken with confidence, creating space for the lady to move into.

Step 6 (Quick): Right foot forward in CBMP, outside partner.
Step forward in CBMP, outside the lady, on the ball of your right foot, lowering at the end of the step to conclude the feather finish. Your alignment will be facing diagonally to center, with your body retaining its right sway to create a harmonious promenade line. The toe should lead this step, touching the floor first with the outside edge before the heel lowers, ensuring a smooth and graceful transition of weight. Your frame remains constant, providing a supportive structure for the lady as she steps back. This final step is a classic foxtrot feather; think of sliding the toe forward effortlessly along the floor.

Step 7 (Slow): Left foot forward.
Step forward on your left foot, preparing to commence the next figure, typically a reverse turn. Your body sway returns to neutral as you settle into closed position, with your footwork being a heel lead. This step is a transition, so maintain your forward poise and connection, ready to lead the next movement with continuity and flow. Keep your frame expansive and your head position calm to present a finished, elegant picture. This is a collecting step; use it to re-establish a perfect closed hold before moving on.

Closed Impetus & Feather Finish (Lady)

Commence in Closed Position, facing LOD.

Step 1 (Slow): Right foot forward.
Step forward with your right foot, down the line of dance, initiating a right turn in response to the man’s lead. Use strong body rotation, keeping your left side stretched and forward to maintain a close connection with the man’s right side. Your footwork is heel to toe, and you should feel a powerful drive from your supporting leg to project yourself forward into this step. Your body sway is neutral, and your head remains looking to your left, with your frame moving as one with the man’s. This is a driving step; straighten your right leg smoothly as you transfer weight to create momentum for the turn.

Step 2 (Quick): Left foot to side.
Step side onto the ball of your left foot, continuing the right face turn and rising smoothly at the end of the step. This step is taken after the body has turned, not before, ensuring you rotate around the man as a single unit. Your alignment will be backing diagonally to center, and your body will develop a right sway, keeping your right side very forward to the man to prepare for the subsequent brush. Your head position remains to the left, and your frame must stay strong and connected. Delay this side step until you feel the man’s body stop and become your axis; then step around him.

Step 3 (Quick): Right foot diagonally forward.
Brush your right foot to your left foot and then step diagonally forward onto your right foot, lowering at the end of the step to conclude the Impetus turn. Your alignment will now be facing diagonally to center against the line of dance, having completed the rotation. Your body sway returns to neutral as you prepare to step forward, and your head may turn slightly to the right if the man’s shaping invites it. Push off strongly from your left foot to project your body forward onto the man’s right side. The brush action is crucial for maintaining momentum and achieving elegant, connected footwork.

Step 4 (Slow): Left foot forward.
Step forward with your left foot, down the new alignment, beginning to turn left with the man’s lead. Rise slightly at the end of this step, keeping your upper body shape consistent and avoiding the common mistake of collapsing your frame into the man and then pulling it back. Your footwork is heel to toe, and your body sway remains neutral, with your head potentially turning back to the left if it was previously right. This step prepares you for the feather finish, so maintain a strong forward poise. Keep your right side stretched forward to the man to feel his lead for the upcoming side step.

Step 5 (Quick): Right foot to side.
Step side and slightly back onto the ball of your right foot, turning left one-eighth of a turn to end backing the line of dance. Your body will develop a left sway as you open into promenade position, but your left arm must not pull back; instead, it should breathe forward to maintain connection with the man. Continue to rise throughout this step, and ensure your head turns definitively to the left to look down the line of dance in promenade position. This step creates the beautiful outside shape characteristic of the feather finish. This is an opening step; think of your right side extending elegantly away from the man as you step.

Step 6 (Quick): Left foot back in CBMP.
Step back in CBMP onto the ball of your left foot, turning left a further one-eighth of a turn to end backing diagonally to center, and lower at the end of the step. Your body retains its left sway, and your left shoulder should be kept forward to present a clean promenade line. Your footwork involves touching the toe first before lowering the heel, and your head remains turned to the left. The man will be stepping outside you, so your frame must provide a supportive structure for his forward movement. Keep your weight forward over your supporting foot to avoid sitting back and breaking the connection.

Step 7 (Slow): Right foot back.
Step back with your right foot, preparing for the next figure. Your body sway returns to neutral as you settle back into closed position, with your footwork being toe to heel. This is a transition step, so maintain your poise and connection, ready to follow the man’s next lead with sensitivity and grace. Your frame should feel light and responsive, and your head position calm. Use this step to collect your weight and re-center your balance in preparation for the next movement.

General Notes

Core Points

  • The man’s first step back must be straight, not angled, to allow the lady room to travel forward on her driving step.
  • The man’s heel turn on step 2 requires a precise weight transfer from the left heel to the right ball of the foot to complete the rotation smoothly.
  • The lady must delay her side step on step 2 until she feels the man’s body stop and become her axis for the turn.
  • The classic foxtrot feather on the man’s step 6 is taken with the toe leading and touching the floor first, not the heel.

Advanced Elements

  • Maintain a consistent, flexible frame throughout the entire figure; it is the primary communication tool for leading the turn and the transition to promenade.
  • The body sway develops naturally as a consequence of the turn and the opening to promenade; it should not be forced or exaggerated.
  • The lady’s head turns are a responsive embellishment to the man’s lead and shaping, not an independent action.
  • The entire figure should be danced with a sense of continuous, gliding flight, even during the turning action, to capture the essential character of the foxtrot.
