Learn how to beautifully dance
the Three Step
Silver level – A smooth, turning transition from promenade back to closed position.
______________________________________________
Let’s explore the beautiful simplicity and essential technique of the Slow Foxtrot Three Step. This fundamental figure, often used after a Feather Finish, embodies the smooth, flowing character of the Foxtrot. It consists of precisely three steps danced to a quick-quick-slow (S-Q-Q) rhythm. Typically starting Diagonal Wall (DW), you’ll move smoothly down the Line of Dance (LOD). Imagine the movement as a gentle, continuous rolling wave – never stopping, always flowing. There’s minimal overall turn, though a slight curve to the left (up to 1/8th) might occur naturally, ending facing LOD. The key is sustained, gliding motion with subtle body actions creating grace and partnership connection. It’s a building block, often leading into a drive step for the next figure, like a Natural Turn.
The Three Step is usually a bronze level Foxtrot figure. For the full list of Foxtrot figures corresponding to each medal level, as per the book “Ballroom Technique” as well as the Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). For more details, see the Figure List for Foxtrot.
Three Step (Man)
Commence in Closed Position, facing DW.
| # | Count | Timing | Steps | Footwork | Alignment | Moving | CBM | Turn | Sway | Rise & Fall | Position |
| 1 | 12 | S | LF fwd | H T | Facing DW | DW | Closed | ||||
| 2 | 3 | Q | RF fwd, R side leading | H T | Facing DW | DW | body turns to L | L | rise e/o 2. | Closed | |
| 3 | 4 | Q | LF fwd | T H | Facing DW | DW | L | Up. Lower e/o 3 | Closed |
- Count 1 (Slow): Commence facing Diagonal Wall (DW), stepping forward onto your LEFT foot directly down the LOD. Lead firmly with your heel (H), keeping the foot flat without rising onto the toe – maintain a level, grounded feeling. Use a very subtle right side leading (think of your right shoulder and rib cage being slightly advanced) to gently guide your partner back into alignment, especially after a Feather Finish. Your body remains facing DW with minimal turn initiated here. Focus on a smooth transfer of weight through the heel, initiating the forward flow. Keep your frame stable and supportive. Imagine you’re pushing a smooth, heavy curtain aside with your chest – the movement starts decisively but flows without jerkiness.
- Count 2 (Quick): Now step forward with your Right Foot (RF), still moving primarily Down the Line of Dance. Transition your footwork from heel to toe (HT). Very subtly, your body will begin to turn slightly to the left; this is the gentle, natural application of Contra Body Movement (CBM). Maintain the slight Left Side Lead (LSL) initiated by the CBM. Rise very slightly begins at the end of this count, absorbed entirely by a controlled flex in your knees – there should be no visible upward bounce or loss of connection. The sway to the left (Sway(L)) starts to develop here, a natural consequence of the body’s movement and shaping. Keep your upper body calm and your frame steady; the movement comes from the legs and core. Ensure your step is directly forward, not crossing over, leaving space for your partner. Visualize stepping through a narrow doorway – keep your pathway straight and your body aligned within the frame, allowing the lady ample room behind you. The rise is like a deep breath filling your chest, not a jump.
- Count 3 (Quick): Complete the figure by stepping forward again with your Left Foot (LF), maintaining alignment down the Line of Dance. Place the foot with a clear Toe then Heel (TH) action. Continue and slightly increase the Left Sway (Sway(L)). Keep the gentle rise established at the end of count 2 (“up”) and then lower smoothly at the end of this count, controlled through the knees. The slight left rotation initiated by the CBM on count 2 continues subtly, winding the frame gently to the left. Focus on maintaining a consistent body speed; avoid accelerating or decelerating abruptly. This step often acts as the powerful “drive step” initiating the next figure (like a Feather Finish or a Natural Turn), so ensure it has purpose and direction without losing smoothness. Imagine you are smoothly rolling a heavy ball forward with your body – the motion is continuous, controlled, and requires steady, connected power. Keep your head poised over your spine, enhancing the elegant left sway line.
Three Step (Lady)
Commence in Closed Position, backing DC.
| # | Steps | Alignment | Moving | CBM | Turn | Sway | Rise & Fall | Position | |||
| 1 | 12 | S | RF back | T H | Backing DW | DW | Closed | ||||
| 2 | 3 | Q | LF back, L side leading | T H | Backing DW | DW | Body turns to L | R | Rise e/o 2. NFR | Closed | |
| 3 | 4 | Q | RF back | T H | Backing DW | DW | R | Up. NFR. Lower e/o 3. | Closed |
- Count 1 (Slow): Commence backing Diagonal Wall (DW), stepping back onto your RIGHT foot directly down the LOD. Place the foot with a Toe then Heel (TH) action, rolling smoothly through the foot. Keep your foot flat without rising – knees remain softly flexed. Step straight back with no turn (No CBM) and no curve to the right; maintain alignment backing DW. Focus on a strong, smooth driving effort through the ball of your foot to initiate the movement in perfect unison with the leader. Lower into your right knee at the end of the step, extending your left leg straight back behind you (toe pointed down) – this push creates length and power. Crucially, keep your upper body forward towards your partner; avoid collapsing backwards or intruding into his space. Imagine your center is magnetically drawn to your partner while your legs extend powerfully away, like stretching a beautiful, strong elastic band.
- Count 2 (Quick): Step back with your Left Foot (LF), continuing down the Line of Dance. Footwork is toe then heel (TH). Develop Right Sway (Sway(R)), achieved by swinging your left hip and left side back while keeping your head left of your spine (don’t let your head swing right!). Maintain a strong stretch through your left side – imagine the distance decreasing between your left ear and left shoulder as you stretch. Keep a slight left-side lead to stay out of the man’s path; focus on stepping straight back, not sideways or with a turned-out foot. Think of extending/straightening your right leg behind you to create space for the man. Roll onto your LF with a flexed knee; stay flat (No Foot Rise – NFR). Keep your chest and left rib cage forward to the man, creating opposition to the stretching left side. This step releases the energy built in count 1; don’t rush it. Keep your left hip “open,” not squared off. Focus on the feeling of your left shoulder blade moving back and down as your chest stays forward, like opening a graceful fan behind you while staying connected at the core.
- Count 3 (Quick): Step back with your Right Foot (RF), finishing backing the Line of Dance. Footwork is toe then heel (TH). Continue the Right Sway (Sway(R)). Maintain the slight rise from count 2 (“up”, NFR), and lower smoothly at the end of this count with control. Step straight back with no CBM. Use your abdominal muscles to actively draw your RF back; resist falling backward or letting your shoulders pull back. Keep your weight blocks forward. Focus on a long, continuous stride; don’t step onto the RF and immediately “exit” the step. Maintain the left side stretch and head extension. Keep contact with the man’s right hip crucial here to ensure harmony. This step often becomes the first drive step of the next figure. Think of this slow step as melting into the movement with control, like sinking slowly into a plush cushion while maintaining perfect, forward-reaching posture towards your partner.
General Notes
Remember the magic of the Three Step lies in it continuous, wave-like flow and sublte partnership
- leaders: focus on clear direction, gentle side leading, and using Contra Body Movement (CBM) subtly to guide. Drive the figure with purpose, especially into count 3.
- followers: master the powerful push on count 1, maintain that all-important forward body position towards the man even while moving backward, and cultivate beautiful, sustained side stretching for line and space.
- flow: and avoid rushing the “Quick” counts – let them flow.
As you get more experience, also focus on:
- For both partners: maintain consistent body contact, control the subtle rise and fall (absorbed through the knees, never bouncing!), and achieve elegant sway as a natural result of body shaping and movement, not forced contortion. Keep knees flexed.
- Think of the Three Step as a single, unbroken phrase of movement, like a length of silk unspooling smoothly onto the floor.
